While I was working on the statistics, Maggie put together the final scene.
Our lightsource became the book to get the spooky feeling, and Maggie also had the idea to put a few of the statistics into the book. All in all I’m really satisfied with the outcome, and I feel like I have learnt a lot in Maya.
While modeling the stickworks I didn’t really know how to add the texture, so Alec helped me out. He showed me a post on the website of Solid Angle that was really useful. After that I also done a bit of research on it to have a better understanding.
Maggie already started modeling some amazing buildings and the bottles in Maya. I wanted to do the book – I didn’t use the one I made before, I was still more newbie at that point and the mesh is a bit messed up, so I created a new one. I wanted to animate the pages a bit, but couldn’t figure out how to rig it, so I moved on to make a few buildings as well.
This is the new book, during the making of this I got more comfortable in using lights as well – yaay.
For my next project I chose the stickworks, they are an installation made by Patrick Dougherty. I really liked the way they looked, and I thought they fitted our plan on the atmosphere well.

I had trouble with the texture, and the final result didn’t turn out the way I wanted it to be, but in general I’m satisfied with the outcome.

The statistics of the city was the only thing we didn’t focus on the historical part. For the source we chose the website, city-data.com, which was really useful. I only choose a few statistics from there to make the diagrams and put it into our presentation. Maggie also put a few of them in the open book in Maya.

While sketching I was trying to focus on the atmosphere of the town, the history of the Trials and the culture. Here are a few of my sketches, also, they are in my sketchbook, pg 15-17, 22-23.
The book idea came after I realized Nathaniel Hawthorne was born there – I also found it interesting that one of his ancsestors was a jury during the Witch Trials.

At the end we liked the book and the floating bottle ideas the best, so we put the two together. This is how our final idea had been born.
Update: I have made a concept art kinda thing as well. I couldn’t spend as much time on it as I wanted to, later on I might come back to it, it’s not finished.
So, for the Floating City project I teamed up with Caitlin and Maggie. Alec told us we don’t have to do Belfast, so we decided on doing Salem, Massachusetts. The city has an interesting history, and we had great ideas how it would look like at the very beginning. After some research on the city itself, I made some sketches. Previously we decided on focusing on the atmosphere, and the witchcraft part of the city.
Unfortunately we couldn’t go and visit Salem itself, so we had to rely on the internet. I found a lot of useful information on the city’s official website, and their historic website as well. I had a quick read on the United Stated History website (www.u-s-history.com) on the town itself, and on Nathaniel Hawthorne as well. In my research tho I was mostly focusing on the Salem Witch Trials of 1692-93. I watched a documentumfilm on the issue (Salem: Unmasking the Devil, 2011) and found a few books as well. I had a look at The Devil in Massachusetts: A Modern Enquiry Into the Salem Witch Trials, written by Marion L. Starkey. Unfortunately I know I won’t have time to read the whole book before the final hand-in, but it’s enough to get a basic knowledge on what could have happened. For me the city seems like it still dwells on the past, a lot of tourist attractions are based on the witches, and this just strengthened my focus on this part.
I also had an opportunity to read Hawthorne’s Young Goodman Brown. I really wanted to get into the atmosphere of the town’s history before starting to sketch anything.
